Zinger finished his FC with 1st Place OLGD (24 Starters) and a 4 Pt Major at the DGSPC on August 26th, 2024! This win came at the end of Summer Camp and follows his huge 1st Place in OGD (30 Starters) and 5 Pt Major at VCSC on January 6th, 2024.

Zinger finished his Field Championship at 2 years old (just shy of turning three) with very limited trialing. We're so proud of our boy!

WHY FIELD TRIALS?

Vizsla breeders must have a goal. Let us assume for the moment that this goal for which we are striving is a super gun dog with range ideally suited for the foot hunter; An attractive, driving dog that intelligently reaches out to the objectives, a nose that will allow him to locate accurately without crowding his birds, stamina to withstand a hard day’s hunt, and a biddable dog that is easily handled and trained. Immediately the average sportsman-hunter with his good shooting dog will exclaim, “...then why fool around with field trials and breed for these wild-running, All- Age dogs?” There are several reasons why field trials are essential in the development and protection of a hunting breed. First, it is a sport unto itself, a source of enjoyment to those who participate (both man and dog), and it stimulates interest in bird dogs and bird dog training. But, much more important, field trials provide a means of comparing bird dogs in the field – thus giving proof (or disproof) to our breeding theories and practices.

The high-class, running field trial performer exemplifies desire, ambition and courage. He displays speed and stamina in covering the maximum amount of ground in a given time. He must show a natural intelligence in his ground pattern and his olfactory powers must be of high order or he would be unable to handle his game at this speed. Style and dash go hand in hand with conformation as does the ability to run fast with the least possible exertion. A dog that is not put together right cannot go the distance and look good doing it! True, these so-called “class” dogs are not at all times also ideal for all hunting excursions, but, to quote from W.F. Brown’s book FIELD TRIALS: “There is a tendency toward average in any long-established breed, and outside of a very few individuals which inherit to a marked degree the intensified qualities of a prepotent sires, the majority of a dog’s get will grade down from high-class performer through all the intermediate grades to that of the rank duffer. The records of prepotent sires reveal the fact that they sired scores of ordinary shooting dogs to one really high-class performer. Consequently, what would be the ratio if we were to breed from individuals of ordinary quality; or, in other words, from such as are common consent considered “ideal shooting dogs” by the rank and file of American Sportsman?

This “Drag of the Race”, or tendency within purebred varieties, when artificial selection is not employed, to revert to the norm of the species, can be simply stated as follows: a dog of field trial caliber will throw possibly one pup like himself in a litter and the rest will be good to excellent hunting dogs. A good to excellent hunting dog may through one or two dogs like himself and the rest fair hunting dogs. A fair hunting dog will produce a few like himself and the rest potterers. This is true of any breed – and this is – Why Field Trials.

LVBDC hosts back to back Field Trials in Mesquite, NV

LVBDC FT Update

We attended two huge trials in Mesquite, NV with an entry of 300+ dogs over both weekends, including several National Field Champions. Two of our up and comers won their first gun dog placements (Cobb and Yara) and we had several ribbons in major stakes (Scorch and Aspen).

Scorch (FC/AFC Vista Make it Burn) wins 4th Place - Amateur Limited Gun Dog handled by Karen Lake (her second ever gun dog stake) and the only Vizsla to get a placement, and later won a respectable 4th Place - Grand Open Limited Gun Dog (hour stake) with Patrick Clark.
Aspen (FC/AFC Coppersage Aspen) won 4th Place - Grand Open Limited Gun Dog (hour stake) with Warren Eizman, and then a 3rd Place - Open Limited Gun Dog with Patrick Clark. Photo of Aspen to be added later.

Oliver wins the inaugural SCVC Desert Classic Regional Championship handled by Patrick Clark and scouted by Warren Eizman. The event was held at Camp H in California City CA, on January 24th, 2023. This event was an hour long Limited stake open to Vizslas only with 14 Starters for 3 points. Thank you judges Jim Kermott and Ed Mayhew!

Over the weekend, at the South Coast Vizsla Club FT -- Oliver won 1st Place - Open Limited Gun Dog for another 5 point major (26 Starters). Judges Kita Morris and Gregg Knight. This team is on fire!!!

Summer Camp Update

Summer Bird Dog Camp is in full swing!

Quick update to share the progress of our Summer Bird Dog Camp --- the rain has been relentless up in the White Mountains and we've lost valuable training time due to the heavy monsoons. But not to worry, those early summer days of training have paid off with many of our client dogs putting together the parts and pieces of becoming a great bird dog.

We are looking forward to the double double Field Trials happening from August 28th to September 5th (Desert German Shorthaired Pointer Club and Valley of the Sun Weimaraner Club, and Sahuaro Brittany Club and Greater Phoenix Brittany Club) in our immediate area and hope to be a part of the ribbon placements throughout the back to back weekends.

Summer Bird Dog Camp 2022 has begun!

Overview

This year's camp is underway as of Tuesday, June 21, 2022. We have more than a dozen dogs from all over the Western US, including several Vizslas from California, Arizona and Montana!

Photo of the string the day before Warren Eizman (Firestorm Birddogs) arrived transporting several more dogs from across the region. Looking forward to evaluations and getting the dogs started in a training program tailored to each dog.
